Stas Gorelik (2026): Review of the International Social Survey Program (published on GESIS Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences), v. 1.0, Discuss Data, https://doi.org/10.48320/7673C6CE-6F8C-4DEF-BCE8-02DED8910AEE

Description

This data review examines the International Social Survey Programme (ISSP), a large cross-national survey project designed to support comparative research on social and political attitudes, values, and behavior. Launched in the 1980s, the ISSP is organized into thematic modules that enable both cross-national and longitudinal analysis across topics such as inequality, religion, national identity, and gender roles. Participation by post-Soviet and Baltic states has been relatively consistent overall, with particularly strong coverage of the Baltic countries and substantial inclusion of Russia, as well as Ukraine to some extent, across multiple modules. Finally, the review discusses key methodological features of the ISSP, including standardized questionnaires and nationally representative sampling, as well as practical aspects of data access. The data can be downloaded via the ISSP portal but require registration with GESIS, where the datasets are stored.
