Description

The European Protest and Coercion dataset lists daily and sub-daily data on protest and coercion events across 28 European countries from 1980 to 1995. It was developed by Prof Ron Francisco and supported by both the National Science Foundation as well as the Department of Political Science and the General Research Fund of the University of Kansas. The data is available as separate datasets for each country. This data review will focus on the German Democratic Republic (GDR) dataset which lists 1.100+ entries in the time period from January 1st 1980 to October 3rd 1990. As of summer 2024, the data collection seems to have concluded (1).
The data review contains a link leading to the official Protest and Coercion Data website from which both the dataset and additional information in the form of a codebook are available as a free download.
