Perceptions of the War in Eastern Ukraine, Attitudes, and Identities – Interview Collection with Residents of the “Donetsk People’s Republic”

Description
This dataset consists of 19 in-depth, semi-structured interviews with residents of the self-proclaimed “Donetsk People’s Republic” conducted between October and December 2021. The interviews were carried out online with eleven women and eight men aged between 20 and 56 who were living in Donetsk, Yasinovataya and Shakhtyorsk at the time of the interviews. The interviews covered the following topics: perceptions of the war in Eastern Ukraine, everyday life in the “DPR”, political attitudes, identity, language, media consumption, cultural practices, and assessments of future conflict developments.
All interviews were conducted in Russian via online communication platforms, including Skype, WhatsApp, Telegram and Viber. Only the audio was recorded, with the respondents’ oral consent and under the condition of anonymity. The total duration of the interviews is 49 hours and 47 minutes, with an average length of approximately 2,6 hours per interview. At this stage, the dataset contains only the description of the data collection method and selection of interviewees. In a later version, the anonymised interview transcripts will be added.
